It’s only been a few days since launch, but the team at Hypixel Studios isn’t slowing down. Hytale Update 1 just dropped on January 17, 2026, and honestly? It’s exactly the kind of polish we were hoping for.
While the game launched in a solid state, there were definitely some quirks (looking at you, skeletons drowning in puddles). This first patch tackles a massive laundry list of fixes, but it also surprisingly drops some new content into the mix. Yes, I’m talking about dinosaurs.
Here’s the breakdown of what matters most in this update and how it changes your game.
🦖 The Underground Jungle Just Got Wild
The headline feature here is undoubtedly the addition of dinosaurs to the underground jungles. If you haven’t explored the depths yet, now is the time.
The devs noted that these NPCs are still using placeholder behaviors, so don’t expect Jurassic Park levels of AI just yet, but seeing them roam around adds a huge layer of atmosphere.
- Important Note: Because this changes the biome environment, you won’t see these dinos in areas you’ve already explored. You’ll need to venture out and generate new chunks to find them.
🎒 Backpacks Are Finally Forgiving
If you’ve been grinding for that first backpack, you know the struggle was real. The cost felt a bit steep for such an essential early-game item. Thankfully, this update significantly rebalances the progression:
- Cheaper Crafting: The Base Backpack now only costs 8 Medium Leather (down from 16).
- Earlier Access: You can now craft it at a Tier 1 Workbench instead of Tier 2.
- Faster Leather: Processing hides into leather is now 10 seconds faster across the board.
This is a massive quality-of-life win for early-game survival. You’ll be carrying more loot much sooner.
🛠️ Crafting & Farming Quality of Life
Speaking of crafting, the headache of running back and forth between chests is over. Crafting benches can now pull materials from chests within 14 blocks horizontally. That’s double the previous range! You can basically wire up your entire workshop to pull from a central storage wall now.
Farming also got a sanity check:
- Corn Nerf: Corn was apparently “misconfigured” and too OP. It now gives 1 Essence of Life instead of 4.
- Seed Fixes: Fully grown crops like Pumpkins and Cauliflower won’t drop regular seeds anymore, saving inventory clutter.
⚔️ Combat Polish & NPC Smarts
Combat feels a little tighter in this patch. The Crystal Earth Golem has had its combat behavior improved (watch out for that spin attack), and fire-themed mobs are finally immune to fire damage.
One specific change competitive players should note: Weapon attacks now check for line of sight. This should prevent some of those cheesy hits through walls or corners that were happening in PvP.
Also, a funny fix: Skeletons will no longer take drowning damage. It never made sense that a bag of bones needed air, so good to see that logic applied.
🎨 Visuals & Immersion
It’s the little things that make Hytale shine. Update 1 adds a bunch of audio-visual flair:
- New Sounds: Hitting stone and ores now sounds different, and ores have layered effects.
- Particles: Eating fruit now has particle effects (satisfying), and there are new sparkles for health potions.
- Memory System: Absorbing a memory now triggers a particle effect above the NPC’s head, making the lore hunting feel more impactful.
🐛 The “Finally!” Bug Fixes
Every patch has them—the bugs we’re glad to see squashed.
- Stamina Exploit: You can no longer swap hotbar slots to bypass stamina costs on charged attacks. RIP to the speedrunners using that one.
- Sleep Time: You can now hit the hay at 7:30 PM, meaning you don’t have to wait around quite as long to skip the night.
- FOV Limit: Sprinting FOV is capped at 160° so you don’t feel like you’re entering hyperspace every time you run.
Verdict
For a first update, this is promising. It shows the devs are listening to feedback regarding the grind (backpacks) while still finding time to toss in fun surprises (dinosaurs). The rapid patching cadence they promised seems to be holding true.
Time to generate some new terrain—I’ve got a dinosaur to find.
